AMD Customer Care has made their point perfectly clear. Support for Linux is poor – and you better be thankful for it.
This explains the piss poor performance on my ThinkPad’s ATI video card, but the workstation with a Nvidia 5200FX and half the cpu kicks its ass.

I remember back in the day when AMD was killing Intel in the CPU market and ATI and Nvidia were trading blows like a rockem sockem robots. Well, times have changed now that AMD bought ATI… Oh, no wait… they haven’t. ATI’s drivers still suck.
At least now they admit it.
